It sounds like it’s time to start building high-performing teams. And Poly Tech Talent can assist in your strategic workforce planning and provide IT staffing solutions! Let’s go over the key characteristic of high-performance teams and how you can get started today.

What is a high-performing team?

A high-performance team is a group of skilled individuals who produce quality products as a result of collaboration and working towards a shared goal. High-performance tech teams are not just a collection of good workers; it is a cohesive group that is greater than the sum of its parts. It is a team built on trust, accountability, and improvement.

Components of a high-performing team – and how to achieve them

1. Clear expectations and communication

In order for a team to function efficiently and effectively, every team member needs to know what they are doing, how to do it, and where to go if they hit a snag. High-performance teams have clearly-defined goals and processes, so everyone is kept on track. When employees are kept in the loop and understand the bigger picture and what they as individuals need to do to achieve it, they have the ability to fulfill individual work as well as contribute to collaborative efforts.

Within the team, employees need to have open channels of communication. Even if most work is done individually, high-performance teams operate as a unit. Every task fulfilled feeds into the bigger picture. So, collaboration and communication are key. When employees have interpersonal relationships, and when they have open channels of communication, they are more likely to raise questions and concerns that can be handled instead of ignored.

Set clear expectations for your team and ensure communication flows freely within the team.

2. Trust

Another way to ensure team members feel safe and fulfilled is to put in the work to establish trust. High-performance teams are not just about results; it’s about how your team members show up every day. When team members feel there is transparency within the company, they feel safe. And when they feel psychologically safe, they want to show up. Productivity will only go up when there are strong bonds of trust within your team. Normalize mistake-making without humiliation or scrutiny, normalize asking questions and providing answers, normalize not knowing everything right away.

To build trust into your team, train everyone on problem-solving and ensure their interpersonal skills align with the personality of your company. Keep those channels of communication open and constantly check in with your team to see how they’re feeling and where improvements can be made.

3. Adaptability and flexibility

High-performance teams do not get stuck in one rhythm; just as the world continues to change around us, our teams must adapt and change as well. A team’s ability to be flexible will determine the quality of their outcomes.

A growth mindset will be essential in elongating the success of your team, and being flexible in their approach will prepare them to take on any challenge and continue to develop their transferable skills. And rather than seeing challenges and obstacles, train your team to take on each need experience as an opportunity for growth.

To build a flexible team, lean on collaboration and always support innovation and creativity. When your team is founded on trust, and you have open channels of communication, employees will feel more comfortable contributing new ideas. Listen to those ideas. Continuously tweak your approach. And stay light on your feet. Tech team development takes time, and things will constantly change.

4. Good behaviour modeled by leadership

A high-performance team can only be achieved if leadership models these characteristics. Everything comes from the top down, and you must lead the way. Set the tone for communication and others will communicate freely and openly. Set clear expectations for yourself as well, holding yourself accountable. Be open and honest with your feedback and open continuous feedback loops back to you as well. Be adaptable in your approach, change things that are not working, and communicate the reasoning for those changes to your team. Be transparent, and transparency will find its way back to you.

The biggest factor that makes or breaks a high-performance team is a leader who shows them the way. Managing technical teams requires empathy and constant collaboration.

5. Culture adds

In hiring, we all talk about cultural fit. Making sure a new employee fits in the team on a basis of personality, goals, and work style is very important. But even more important for a high-performance team is a cultural add, not just a cultural fit. High-performance teams are built from many pieces, working harmoniously together. Each team member will have their own strengths and their own function. It’s important that they all fit together, and it is equally as important that they all bring a unique dimension to the table in order for the team to continue innovating.

Building a high-performance team starts with hiring the right people, which is where we come in.
